Eco friendly
The Kettuvallam or boat with knots is called so because ropes tied in knots hold the entire structure of the boat together. Unbelievably it may sound, not a single nail is used in the making of a ketuvallam. Jackwood planks or Aanjili' are joined together with coir rope and then coated with black resin made from boiled cashew nut shells. The materials used in the construction of Kettuvallam are organic in nature. Wood is used for the construction of the hull. It is renewable, light and a poor conductor of heat & sound. The interior furniture are either of cane or wood, floor carpeted with coir mat or wood panels. Many houseboats have solar energy panels for lighting at night. Others use lamps suspended at several places, producing a romantic ambience in the evenings. Solar panels are also used for refrigeration and other purposes.
